The past tenses follow a similar formula to the present tenses. The past continuous tense always has the verb ending in "ing". In order to teach this effectively, a n "engage, activate, study, activate" approach might help students understand the different past tenses. Exercises such as asking students what they did over the weekend or yesterday to interviewing each other about each other's lives will encourage students not only to use the correct tenses, but the speak to one another and correct each other if needed. Then having the student share some information they learned about their partner to the class can ensure that they are also listening with purpose to their classmates.
