Here we learned about various methodologies for teaching ESL, with a focus on the engage, study, activate patterning that is found to be particularly effective. The idea of a lesson is to have student's doing as much of the language themselves as possible, with the teacher correcting errors and introducing new ideas as needed based on the levels and needs of the students. Engagement focuses on getting the students into the language, allowing them to "warm up" their skills and really get interested in speaking. Studying is where the bulk of grammatical/phonetic work will be done, where new ideas are introduced and practiced, and is the best place for school-like work with worksheets etc. Activation is similar to engagement, but uses the target language with more teacher input and corrections where need be.
A boomerang lesson uses an engage-activate-study-activate pattern, which allows the teacher to see where students are at for the target lesson (by observing the 1st activate lesson) before teaching in the study section, finished by a reinforcement of the target language in the second activate section.
Patchwork lessons use multiple study-activate pairs after the engagement, but are usually only suitable for longer lesson times.
