Unit 13 gives insight into teaching pronunciation and phonology.
Although many teachers neglect teaching pronunciation, it is very important to do so, as many students think English pronunciation is very hard to learn. A good pronunciation is important for being understood and expressing personal feelings and attitudes, too. The intention of a sentence varies depending on its intonation, whether it is rise/fall, fall/ rise or flat intonation. Stressing certain words within a sentence indicates the emphasis of a sentence, too. Only the vital syllables in the words carrying the most important information within a sentence are stressed usually. Sound joining often happens in spoken English. The phonemic alphabet is there to help students to find out the correct pronunciation of words themselves (e.g. in a dictionary). I’ve benefitted the most from understanding the phonemic alphabet and from the practical ideas to indicate and teach intonation and stress, and how to teach the pronunciation of individual sounds.
