Unit 5 is all about managing classes.
In the beginning, it makes the reader aware of the fact that it’s important both to have a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and to maintain discipline in the class. The teacher must use his voice, eye contact and gestures wisely to achieve this goal, but he/she has to think about how to group the students in different stages of the class and how to arrange the classroom, too. Advantages and disadvantages of each possible form are highlighted. It’s also emphasized how instructions should be given and how to keep teacher talking time low. The unit ends with advices to prevent and respond to problem behaviour.
I’ve learned how important it is to reflect on all these topics before teaching, to vary students’ groupings and how to prevent discipline problems.
