Unit 19 is about teaching special groups.
A first special group are the beginners, although the term “beginner” may vary much, too, and includes many different types such as adult or young beginners, absolute or false beginners, and all those without Roman alphabet. It’s important to adapt the approach to slow and simple speaking, the use of many props, a lot of praise and encouragement to speak English, and many other aspects.
Secondly, teaching individuals differs from teaching a whole class, as a single student is usually highly motivated, his/her needs are very clearly defined, and a close relationship can be developed. On the other hand, classroom dynamics may get lost and it might get tiring. Of course, the activities must be adapted, too, because group work is not possible.
Children usually don’t choose to study English themselves, but language learning is much easier to them than to adults and they have a natural curiosity. Because they have a shorter span of attention, activities need to be changed frequently and they should be fun and stimulating. Children want to be noticed by the teacher and be appreciated for their efforts.
Teaching business English or English for specific purposes requires a good insight into what the company / clients deal with in their job and what their special needs are. The teaching should always be relevant to them and the targets be revealed.
Finally, classes are different whether they are monolingual or multilingual. Both have their advantages and challenges. Use of English only should be encouraged in any case.
I have gained understanding of many different aspects that need to be taken care of concerning these different groups of learners. I think I especially like to teach children. I have found many important aspects to consider and agree very much with the statement that the teacher’s attitude, personality, and behaviour are very important factors in the teaching process.
