This unit covers the various forms of testing and evaluation pertaining to the study of English as a second language. The unit covers the differences between diagnostic, placement, progress and external exams. Various countries and areas of the world tend to subscribe to various type of External examinations in an effort to show learning and proficiency in areas of learning English that are important to that entity or country. Some examinations determine proficiency in expressive and receptive communication, grammar, vocabulary, business, general day to day interactions or other areas of interest or any mix of the areas mentioned. Notable examinations include the TOEFL, Cambridge, Trinity College - ESOL Skills for Life, other used in Japan and the Middle East among other recognized international exams. Examples of a practice test was also given noting various sections that seek to elicit various skills and competencies from the student(s).
