Westfield, Pennsylvania TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In Unit 19, teaching special groups was in focus. Firstly, teaching beginners was discussed. Different types of beginners were distinguished. Tips how to teach them were provided, too.
Secondly, teaching individual students was introduced. Suggestions were given how to make the most of the lessons, and it was emphasised that the combination of what the student wants and what the teacher thinks he or she needs should be balanced. 1-1 activities were recommended.
Thirdly, teaching children was in focus. Children often seek teacher approval, like having fun, and have short attention span. Thus, teachers need to keep it in mind that the lesson has to include various (mostly short) exercises and games. Furthermore, praising is essential for young learners, too. Potential discipline issues were discussed (e.g. attention seeking, peer pressure).
Finally, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) covered how to teach Business English. The most important thing about teaching Business English is that language teachers need to focus on the fact that they are not there to teach business, but English. Different settings of teaching Business English were listed. Suggestions were provided how to help students gain the most of the lessons (e.g. cover as much as they are able to take since they might be tired after work). A good balance between what students want and need is essential here, too. It is highly recommended for teachers to get familiar with the students’ company and job in order to know which areas of English they need the most.
