In Class Management,issues like eye contact, gestures, even voice, are as important as type of grouping a teacher uses in a classroom. The way a teacher speaks (softly, loudly, quickly, slowly) is key; variety in a voice is similarly important. Deciding where to position herself, and when (Study period, v. different from Activate period),also plays a role in an experienced teacher's classroom. I am currently teaching in a room that has 1 table, often crowded with students (young women refugees, some of whom bring their nursing babies to class); the key, I've found, is preparedness: flashcards on the table elicits attention. Brief, clear words/phrases on the board are similarly helpful.
