I have learned that it is important to be kind and patient because learners need to know they are loved and supported through the learning process; this encourages motivation. It's important to balance my roles between manger, prompter, participant, tutor and model as I believe these 5 are most crucial for students to feel heard, understood, and have enough structure to learn, especially if they are stuck or discouraged. A good learner is someone who has a desire to learn and this desire/motivation is effected by asking questions, listening well, experimenting, accepting errors, and in turn, these will effect their desire/motivation to learn. These qualities are dependent on one another and as a teacher, it's my job to care about my teaching but even more so, to put a student's learning above all else. It's important for me to remember that everyone will be at a different level of learning and some may need more individual attention; this is where I will need to provide role of tutor. I am excited to teach English because I want to travel to Guatemala or Costa Rica or some Spanish-speaking country where others are motivated to learn!! It is possible that others may have similar motivations to want to learn English as I do for teaching it!
