This lesson states that all 4 skills are equally important, and while that might be true for overall learning, I think it really depends on the aims of the individual. I'm teaching English, but I've been studying Japanese for 6 years. Now that I'm in the advanced levels, I focus a lot more on speaking and reading. Of course, due to kanji, the hurdle for reading is much more difficult than memorizing 26 letters, and I writing isn't very necessary for me because even Japanese people mostly type kanji now. For English, those elements aren't a problem, so it's easier to make the argument that all four skills should be focused on. Unfortunately, Japan focuses on entrance exams, so our opportunity for speaking practice is limited compared to the other 3 skills. Reading this unit gave me a few good ideas to use for my supplementary English club lessons, though.
