Unit 7, which covers vocabulary, grammar and functions, refers to a teaching method covered earlier in Unit 3, ESA, engage, study and activate. But first, the topic of vocabulary was covered. A number of factors were given as influencers as to whether a vocabulary item is easy or difficult, including:
• Similarity to students’ own language
• Similarity to English words already known
• Spelling and pronunciation
• Appropriacy
Criteria for selecting vocabulary to teach, as well a list of what students need to know about a vocabulary term is also given. It’s under the “Techniques for vocabulary teaching” section that the different types of ESA methods, including “straight arrow,” “patchwork,” and “boomerang” are once again shared.
