This unit explains the origins and how each approach to teaching English as a second or foreign language is used. Each approach is given the pros and cons to how the lessons are are taught, from the oldest and most popular approach worldwide, the Classical or Grammar-Translation approach to the latest ESA (Engage, Study and Activate) method that came in 1998. Following from that overview, information is given about the ESA method and possible activities for each stage. This is useful for giving ideas and explanations for how to motivate, involve, teach, assess, correct errors and give feedback to students. The task sheet applies the knowledge with asking to create lesson plans to different language levels of students using the ESA method. A theoretical and practical unit for teachers both new and returning. I noticed I felt more confident about creating lesson plans for two reasons. Firstly because I was clearer about achieving outcomes as ESA used the best of the previous approaches. Secondly because I had a better understanding of language levels and could choose activities appropriate to the students’ levels for each stage.
