To successfully learn a new language students need to be exposed to it, understand its meaning and construction, as well as be able to practice and produce it.
Unit seven was useful to me as it helped and clarified on what certain aspects to focus on and stress when teaching new language, its vocabulary, grammar and functions. Here I see the benefits and advantages of ESA teaching method, either 'straight arrow' approach (in most cases for teaching grammar and vocabulary) and 'boomerang' and 'patchwork' (usually for language functions); though teacher can adapt and choose the most appropriate one.
Selecting the right vocabulary, explaining to students its meaning, usage, spelling and pronunciation is of the utmost importance for the teacher. There are various activities for different stages of ESA method that should bring the best results (E: using realia, mime, pictures..; S: gap filling, crosswords, matching, etc.; A: discussions, debates, role plays, story building). Similar pattern is used in grammar teaching, while language structure requires activation, so role plays are a great choice when teaching them.
I like the examples of putting the ESA technique in practice, as I can see how it should really work in classroom.
