This unit covered effective ways to control the class while maintaining a relaxed learning environment. Teachers can utilize a variety of techniques to keep the classroom focused on the lesson. Primarily, teachers can use eye contact to show students they are a part of the lesson and to encourage listening and feedback. Teachers should use gestures that are appropriate culturally or internationally recognized, in order to convey meaning and reinforce instructions. Additionally, the tone and voice of teachers should vary throughout the class and teachers are encouraged to use student’s names, especially at the end of their questions to the class. This unit also covered the advantages and disadvantages to grouping students in pairs, small groups, the whole class, and individually. Depending on how the teacher would like to group or organize the class, they can use different classroom arrangements, such as lines, semi-circle and small groups set ups. This unit outlined the use of teacher talking time and student talking time and encouraged creating a balance between the two. Lastly, this unit covered strategies for establishing rapport between teachers and students, while identifying and preventing problem behavior.
