This unit was about the receptive skills (reading and listening). When choosing material to practice these skills it's important to think about the vocabulary that could cause problems to the students, to choose a topic that is interesting to them and to vary topics.
When students listen and read, their understanding of the text/dialogue will depend on:
- skimming (look for the gist of the text or dialogue)
- scanning (look for something specific)
- predictive skills (when you read the headline of a text or listen to an excerpt of the dialogue and guess what it will be about)
- detailed information (when we read/listen very carefully to gain full benefit)
- deduction of context (when we see beyond the literal meaning)
It's important to engage the students before doing the reading/listening, so this way they'll be interested and will participate, even if they don't like the topic of the lesson.
