From Unit 3, I've learned many interesting things. First, eye contact, gesturing and my voice all play an important role in developing rapport, maintaining discipline/control of the classroom, and establishing trust among the students and myself as teacher. I never thought eye contact could have so many uses! The ones I wasn't aware of are: holding the attention of students who I'm not addressing, maintaining discipline in the classroom, and using it as a way to start, stop, and encourage someone to answer. Also, for the use of students' names, I've always put it at the start of my sentence, not the end; this will help me in keeping students' attention. While having students in pairs, I need to monitor to ensure they're not speaking in their L1 language, and that they are challenging themselves to practice their English. Another thing I was unaware of is that there are such things as teacher verses student talk times. It is best to do things that will increase student talk time (STT) such as having them work in pairs or groups as much as possible, as well as asking them reflection and feedback questions after activities to stimulate thoughts/opinions and increase STT. Rapport building is huge in the classroom atmosphere as it increases students' willingness to contribute. I can increase rapport in the classroom by allowing them to correct each other, working in pairs/groups and changing pairs frequently, making sure they know others' names and information about one another, and being strategic in where I seat each student in the classroom. I loved that this lesson gave so many reasons for unruly behavior so I could understand why students do what they do and how to handle things I may be faced with in the classroom. Most important was how to handle these behaviors: The two I resonated with the most were to focus on the behavior instead of the student so they don't feel attacked/judged, and to act immediately. I should not wait for the behavior to worsen.
