This unit focused on the two receptive skills of listening an reading, as well as core components of them, important differentiation in goals of receptive skills and manners in which they are employed. It also covered how to effectively structure a lesson to target receptive skills and how to select materials with an eye on topic, content and possible issues that may arrive.
In this unit I found the break up of different reception types interesting, as I had not really considered the difference before, and as a language learner myself I was able to relate my different experience in reading and listening to (particularly reading) these 5 types.
I also found the 5 things important to selecting effective reading content useful. I often am able to read non authentic texts fairly well, but often struggle with a range of more authentic texts such as native language children's entertainment or comics despite the fact that I understand the vast bulk of vocabulary and grammar within them. This cement my understanding that a mix is important for students if they wish to become proficient in a language, rather than be able to simply pass through text books with ease. Similarly the variety of topics I find to be very important, as vocabulary and manner of speech are often dictated by the topic, a student may be fairly proficient in a topic they know, but unable to communicate on another without variety. In a classroom setting it is also important to vary the topic so that students are able to learn about topics they are interested in, boosting motivation and comprehension.
