This unit covered the basic building blocks of sentences in English often referred to as parts of speech. It covered the 8 basic word types found in English. Nouns, Adjectives, Articles, Verbs, Adverbs, Pronouns, Prepositions, and Gerunds. Of these I found Adverbs and Prepositions the most difficult to separate as their categories often over lap. Adverbs are used to provide information primarily about verbs or to modify them in a sentence and are split into manner, time, place, degree and frequency categories, while pronouns are usually used to provide information about a noun in relation to the rest of the sentence, describing location, time of movement. I would have liked some examples for this section and much of my study time was spent making examples for myself on how theses differ.
I also learned the importance of being able to break a sentence down into these simple building blocks to more easily see how a sentence actually functions. This will be i feel very important with adult students and during lesson planning, but with younger students teaching grammar in blocks like this or at least explaining in this type of mechanical systematic manner may not be very effective.
