I found this unit to be fascinating for my own language study not just the teaching aspect. In talking about the different parts of the mouth and vocal organs that are used in speech, I felt I was getting a science lesson more than teaching pronunciation lesson. I'm also interested in using the phonemic alphabet more when teaching new words in my classes. Even teachers in American schools don't stress the need for this alphabet in pronunciation and I believe it should be considered equally important for native speakers to know as well as non-native speakers to use and practice. It takes out the guess work when describing a sound. This unit was a fascinating science/ linguist lesson as well as useful for tackling some of the more difficult aspects of teaching pronunciation, stress, and intonation.
Helping students navigate these difficult parts of the English language, I feel, will help them feel more accomplished in their studies. If they know how to say the word just by reading it, they may feel more inclined to find new material on their own. If they can pronounce sounds more fluently so people understand them better, they may be more inclined to practice talking to native speakers. In any case, student motivation and accomplishment should be celebrated even if they never will sound like a native speaker of English.
