First and foremost, the attitude of the teacher has a profound effect on the lesson. In the first video, the teacher was uninterested in the students, abrasive, and sharp. This made students feel uninterested, confused and shy (afraid to answer). In contrast, the teacher in the second lesson was friendly, interested in the students (introducing himself and asking the student's their names), not reprimanding student's for incorrect answers, and laughing and smiling. This made the student's much more engaged in the lesson.
In addition, the teacher in the first lesson also did not follow the ESA format, omitting the engage phase and teaching above the level of English that students were comfortable with. This left the students unable to comprehend the concepts in the lesson. In the second lesson, the teacher followed the ESA format, working with students with what concepts they already knew (in the Engage phase) and then introducing new concepts (in the Study phase).
