Students need to be exposed to the new language, understand its meaning, how it's constructed and be able to practice and produce it. Next, grammar is taught also using the ESA techniques. The patchwork pattern can be used, having them activate after the engage phase. An example would be engaging students to talk about their favorite books, then write a summary of the story. The study phase will analyze the synopsis so that they understand the meaning, form and pronunciation of the sentences. The patchwork pattern can be EASASA, repeating the activate stage, then study and activate again. Language functions include inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing and suggesting. Boomerang and patchwork patterns can be used, varying engage, study and activate phases.
