Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
It this lesson I learned about the methodologies that have been used to teach students another language. Some of them are:
- Grammar-traslation: learning through finding equivalents of the new language in the students' own language.
- Audio-lingualism: if you are exposed to the language and you have the posibility to practice it, you'll learn it.
- The silent way: the students talk in the new language. The teacher intervenes little.
- PPP: the teacher shows the language in context, then the students practice it and finally there is a production stage, among others.
It may be difficult to decide which aproach it's the best, but we can draw some conclusions:
- To learn, the students need to be in a relaxed, low-stress enviroment.
- The students need to be exposed to the language.
- The students need to experiment with the language
- They also need to receive corrections, as well as praise.
The ESA method allows the students to be motivated, to be exposed to the language and to have the opportunity to use it.
There are three types of ESA lessons:
- Straight Arrow
- Boomerang
- Patchwork
It's important to always begin the lesson with an engage stage and finish it with an activate stage.
Also, it's very important to make the student be interested in the lesson, for that we use elicitation. These are some elicitation techniques: realia, drawing, pictures, mime, gap fill, ask for the question, etc.
If the student makes an error/mistake, the teacher should try to make him/her realize about it (self-correction). If the student cannot correct the mistake/error, then the teacher should ask the other students (student-student correction). If this doesn't work the teacher can intervene.
