This unit covered some widely-used methods for teaching language and their strengths and weaknesses, and then teaches the engage-study-activate method for planning a course. In this method, an engagement activity is used to draw students' attention toward the course content in the engagement phase, a lesson is taught in the study phase, and then the learned content is elicited through an exercise in the activation phase. These phases call for the teacher to play different roles--for example, in the engagement phase, the teacher's role should be to facilitate student involvement, rather than to dominate conversation or correct mistakes. These three steps can be moved around in more complex lessons, so long as the engagement phase begins the lesson and the activation phase ends it.
