Unit 11 is about teaching receptive skills, which are listening and reading. The motives for reading and listening can generally be broken down into two categories: for a purpose, or for entertainment. Skills used when reading or listening include: predictive skills to predict the content from a headline or introduction; scanning for specific information; skimming for a general idea of the content; looking for detailed information; and deducing the meaning from context. Sentence length, word length, and unfamiliar words can cause problems when students are learning by reading and listening. To reduce issues, it may be helpful to pre-teach difficult vocabulary and carefully select texts to expose students to a variety of language. By choosing topics that interest the students and creating interest by discussing the topic, predicting what the text may be about, and other "engage" activities, it may help to get students excited, motivated and engaged in the texts.
