Unit 1 was about Teachers and Learners. It talked about what qualities a good teacher should possess and what roles a teacher should perform to cater to his or her students' learning needs. Also, it touched on the different qualities that should be evident on a good learner and how adult and young learners differ from each other. In this unit, my understanding of how a teacher should be and what roles he or she has to play was refreshed. From the detailed description of every role of a teacher, one thing was certain to me, that a teacher should be flexible and can adapt to any given classroom situation. A teacher should master the skill of discernment when to shift roles for the sake of the student. In the same way, learners must also show qualities of being a good learner. And these qualities are greatly affected by their age, culture, learning experiences and motivation. All in all, this unit gave me a clearer idea on how I should be as a teacher to help my future students learn better and hopefully become teachers themselves to other willing learners of language someday.
