Upon reflection, my biggest take-away from unit 2 is that the techniques within the TEFL methodology of Engage Study and Activate (ESA) are endless. I learned various techniques that are immediately applicable to the classroom environment. Engage activities include introduction prompts, alphabet introductions, anagrams, among others, and are used for the purpose of getting the students to warm up and practice speaking their English before moving on to the study phase. Within the study phase, I can use techniques like language drills in pronunciation, grammar, and spelling and can even make this fun by using tongue twisters (Peter Piper example), hangman, and the word scramble activity. This phase is where much of my teaching and most of the corrections can be made, never over-correcting as it's more important to praise than to correct. For the activate phase, I can use role play, adjusting the level of difficulty depending on the level of the students in my classroom. Examples include having one student role play the shopper and the other play the shop assistant for example. No matter whether the boomerang, straight arrow, or patchwork lesson format is used, each must start with the engage phase and end with the activate phase. One of my absolute favorite activities happened to be in the engage phase which TEFL calls the "Consequence" activity (I think it's similar to MAD LIBS). This is where each student writes one word given the prompt on the worksheet, hides what he wrote, then passes it to the next student to fill out. By the time their paper reaches back to them, they each have a very funny story which they can choose to read out loud to the class and make everyone laugh!
