I personally found this lesson to be unrealistically challenging. I've worn hearing aids since I was born, so while it's not significant, I've always had a bit of trouble with correct pronunciation myself. I can usually chalk it up to dialect and accent, but this phonetic system is essentially like learning yet another language. The chapter mentions the students using the phonetic system to understand how sounds are produced, but it seems very impractical and complicated to me. The entire part about stresses in sentences and words makes complete sense from an analytical standpoint, but I've watched my co-teacher in Japan stand in front of a class using her teacher's edition of a textbook marked all over the place with those stress arrows and I think that trying to recreate that unnaturally is just impractical. As the chapter mentions, there's no right approach, and my approach will certainly be to deal with pronunciation on a case by case basis.
