In Unit 13 pronunciation and phonology of the English language were introduced as often neglected and problematic but essential areas of teaching. Concerning pronunciation, intonation and stress were discussed in detail. Teaching ideas were provided (e.g. nonsense words, underlining). Sound joining and linked speech were part this unit, too. The Phonemic Alphabet and its symbols were introduced and suggested to be taught to students. Articulation was described in details. Places and manners of articulation were listed and explained (e.g. velar, plosive). Ideas to teach the pronunciation of individual sounds were suggested (e.g. peer dictation). The question “When to teach pronunciation?” was also raised, although there is no right time to teach it, teachers need to decide when and how they integrate it to their lessons.
