Receptive skills include understanding when you listen and when you read. You receive the language and decode the meaning to understand the message. Productive skills are speaking and writing. You use the language that you have acquired and produce a message through speech or written text that you want others to understand. All these four skills are very important and interconnected. For example, working on reading skills can benefit to the development of writing. Although sometimes we want to focus on the developing some particular skill, teachers should try to keep their lessons balanced and try to incorporate both receptive and productive skills.
