In unit eleven, the material discussed was teaching receptive skills, meaning reading and listening. Foreign speakers often have a more difficult time with reading and listening because they lack pre-existing knowledge that native speakers understand, such as the names of football teams, or words with multiple meanings. Skills that aid foreign speakers in their ability to understand context include the ability to predict upcoming content, to identify important information, to skim over unimportant information, and to utilize deductive reasoning. However, foreign speakers will face problems when sentence length, word length and word unfamiliarity arise, especially when listening. Therefore, teachers should carefully select their texts, pre-teach special vocabulary terms, choose relevant topics and utilize comprehension based tasks to reinforce understanding. Although there are strategies teachers utilize to help with receptive skills, students need to move past the phase of needing to understand every single word in order to feel comfortable with the language.
