The biggest difficulty English simple past tense poses for Spanish speaking students, as well as simple present tense does, is the use of the auxiliary verb do in question and negation forms. We have auxiliary verbs for some tenses but not for simple present or simple past so, students find it difficult to apply these elements ( do or did) when forming questions or negations. When they do use did, for example, they forget to use the base form of the verb and they keep the past tense form. Apart from this, past tense forms are very similar in both languages.
