The biggest take-away from unit 7 for me was how to approach problems students may have with listening. For instance, I can pre-teach anticipated difficult/unknown words students may have problems with before listening to the dialogue. For this, I don't need to over-teach them, but rather I can teach the words that are essential to their understanding the audio script. I can encourage them to understand the dialogue without knowing every word as well. Similar to skimming a text when we read, students can be encouraged to "skim" and listen for the general idea of the dialogue. Another thing I learned from this lesson is that even if students hate the topic (it's difficult to meet every single person's interests), I can still engage and motivate them through use of engage exercises such as jumbled texts and jigsaw reading in pairs. Such reading is called comprehension tasks and can check for their understanding of the text before moving on. I really enjoyed reading the examples of lesson plans utilizing the receptive skills lessons. What I learned from these were that for the activate stage, I can actually have students write a brief account of a famous person the pair knows well without saying the name. Then I can have them read the account to the class and have the class guess who it is. This was very fun, engaging, and creative, and I think my students would be very interested in doing this exercise!
