Unit 7 addresses how to introduce new language (grammar, vocabulary and functions) in a balanced and manageable way, and how to use the ESA method to do so. It discusses selecting vocabulary to teach (how appropriate it is for students and tasks, how easy it is to teach, how frequently it's used) and what students need to know about words (meaning, spelling, pronunciation, etc). I learned techniques for teaching vocabulary with the ESA method (examples: mime/pictures to engage; word searches/gap fill for the study portion; small group discussion/role play, etc for the activate stage). To introduce new grammar structures, some examples for each stage of ESA include: discussion and prompting to engage; individual repetition and information gaps to study; communication games and role play to activate. Patchwork and boomerang ESA lesson plans are often helpful when introducing new language, as it allows for multiple opportunities to practice the language being taught.
