This section focused on multiple TEFL methodologies that could be effectively employed with different groups of English language learners, especially focusing on the ESA method: Engage, Study, Activate. It’s clear that is the preferred system of ITTT. The Engage phase refers to piquing the students' interest through an activity or series of activities meant to have students begin thinking about the topic of the lesson, including through elicitation strategies -- meaning methods of causing the students to form and put forward ideas of their own. Study then focuses strictly on the subject of the lesson and is the phase in which the teacher provides direct and active instruction to the student. The activate phase then moves on to activities in which the students are making active use of their newfound knowledge and instruction gleaned through the earlier two phases. This unit also made clear that there are variations of the ESA technique that call for iterative use of different phases or structuring lessons that switch-up the order. For each phase listed above this unit provided multiple examples and suggestions of activities that may be effective, fun, or useful for TEFL classrooms.
