In this unit I learned what the characteristics of a good teacher and a good learner are:
A good teacher must:
- be kind and patient
- motivate the students without offending them or making them feel afraid to ask questions in the future
- know their students weaknesses and give personalized help when necessary
- have a good knowledge of the language (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation)
- love teaching, etc.
A good learner must:
- experiment with the language
- be willing to learn
- listen to the language
- accept error correction
- ask questions
I also learned about the roles of the teacher and that he/she must have the ability to know when to change from one role to the other, depending on what he/she wants to achieve in the lesson. Some of the roles of the teacher are:
- Monitor (check progress of students while doing an activity)
- Assessor (give feedback, corrections, evaluate students)
- Manager or controller (direct students from the front of the class)
- Tutor (give personalized help when needed)
- Prompter (encourage students so they remember when they get stuck on an idea or lose the thread)
- Model (give them an example of how a word is pronounced)
- Facilitator (create activities to practice the language)
Finally, I learned the knowledge of English is classified in six levels (Common European Framework):
- Breakthrough (A1)
- Waystage (A2)
- Threshold (B1)
- Vantage (B2)
- Proficiency (C1)
- Mastery (C2)
