While studying the unit about "Teaching Receptive Skills," several things stood out to me. First of all, there are two main methods for students to receive information in English--reading and listening. They are both important, but listening tends to be more difficult because students only have one opportunity to receive the text in most cases. The second thing I noticed is that when a native English speaker reads a text he uses several methods to understand what the text is saying. These methods include: predictive reading, scanning for specific information, skimming for the main idea, and reading for detailed information. Finally, this unit emphasized the point that a teacher must consider the interest of the students when chosing a text in order to motivate them to learn. These are all things taught in Unit 7, "Teaching Receptive Sills."
