Productive skills are speaking and writing. The teacher must create the need and desire to communicate. Accuracy activities are part of the study phase. Controlled drilling by the teacher stresses accuracy. Guided activities are more creative and productive. The teacher does not control the exact language. Fluency based activities are considered the activate phase. They can be free role play, discussions, information gap, debates, simulations and communications games. Students may be hesitant to speak because of anxiety. To encourage interaction the teacher can do pair work, group work, and give them plenty of controlled and guided practice so that they gain confidence in using the new language. The teacher should prepare for the lesson by being organized and aware of the ability of the students to perform the task. They need to know the aims of the activity and what they are to do. Monitor the activity but don't interrupt except to provide help and encouragement.
