Unit 11 explained how to teach receptive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening. First, different purposes of reading and listening were distinguished. Then various factors that understanding depends on were listed. It was well explained how to approach language difficulty, how to choose appropriate and interesting topics for students, and how to create interest in the class. Furthermore, some comprehension tasks were recommended (e.g. jigsaw reading). It was highlighted that comprehension tasks should not only check but also promote understanding of the text. A typical receptive skills lesson was also introduced in a patchwork ESA style.
