There are four skills in language acquisition: reading, writing, listening and speaking. This unit was about reading and listening, otherwise known as receptive skills. We can use receptive skills for a purpose, like reading or listening to directions so we can get to a new place, or for entertainment like reading a book or listening to an audiobook. There are also different ways to read and listen depending on how much information we need to get from something, how in-depth we need that information to be and how much time we have. As teachers, we need to make sure that when we select texts or audio for reading and listening practice that they are interesting and engaging for the students and are at an appropriate level. We can use a combination of authentic materials (not written for language students) or inauthentic materials (created with language students in mind). We must also create level-appropriate tasks so that the comprehension of the students can be judged.
