After reviewing several methods and techniques, Engage, Study and Activate, put forward by Jeremy Harmer, is the most effective method to teach a language. Students need exposure to the language, input from the teacher and the chance to practice and discover language for themselves. The first component of the ESA process is elicitation. Elicitation is a strategy to get learners to respond. The engage phase is considered a warmer to get the students thinking and speaking English as much as possible. The study stage starts with elicitation. Spelling, vocabulary, grammar are then taught. There is more correction of errors in the study phase. Correction should be made by the teacher as the last choice. Self correction and correction by other students take priority. Praise is the most important part of teaching. It's most important to keep the students learning in an upbeat atmosphere. The students can then go on to the Activate stage to practice what they have learned and become fluent in the new language.
