Unit 15 discusses different ways to evaluate the levels and progress of students. Tests are one common way in which to do this. Placement tests may be given before the start of a course to determine the language level of students and the appropriate class to place them in. A diagnostic test will inform a teacher of what students do or do not know at the start of a course and to help them plan appropriate lessons. Progress tests may be given periodically to evaluate what students have learned throughout the course. An achievement test may be taken at the end of a language course. There are many external examinations offered by different organizations (i.e. TOEFL, used for U.S. university admissions purposes or IELTS, used for students who need to work or study where English is the language of communication). There are also proficiency tests, which may help to assess English proficiency at certain levels (i.e. Common European Framework). The Cambridge Assessment exams are the world's leading certificates for learners of English, and are widely recognized for work and study purposes.
