I found this lesson on theories, methods and techniques extremely useful as it offers some great ideas for games and activities on how to motivate and engage students.
Lesson starts with an overview of various popular methodologies in EFL teaching (Grammar-Translation, Audio-Lingualism, PPP, Communicative Language Teaching, the Silent Way etc). The best approach, however, depends on teachers' personality and students' culture and needs, as each technique has its positive and negative sides.
Next, the lesson presents ESA teaching technique (Engage - Study -Activate) as one of the best ways to teach a language, as in this way teacher can best motivate students, expose them to the target language, and provide them with an opportunity to use it. ESA technique can be conducted in a 'straight-arrow' way, for lower level learners, 'boomerang' for higher levels, or 'patchwork', which offers flexibility and balance, but is more appropriate for intermediate and higher level students, and it shouldn't last shorter than an hour.
I was happy to see that teaching so far I've often been using this technique, even though I wasn't aware of it's name. It shows me that I'm on the good way in my teaching career.
As I've struggled a bit with giving feedback to my students, I found the part of lesson on giving feedback and correcting students' mistakes very useful, because it gave me some advice on how, what and when to correct.
