Millerstown, Pennsylvania TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit, teaching productive skills is addressed, which refers to the skills of speaking and writing. When improving a student’s speaking skills, it is important to utilize both fluency and accuracy activities. Although speaking the language correctly is important, the ability to be creative with the language shows deeper understanding. To teach speaking in the classroom, the teacher can use a range of activities that either emphasize accuracy, like call and response activities and model dialogues, or fluency with open discussions and debates. In order to encourage speaking by all students, the teacher should create a comfortable and judgement free environment. Additionally, teachers can use pair work, group work, classroom dynamics and more to further encourage engagement. When creating speaking activities there are guidelines a teacher should follow, which include maintaining clear goals, preparing for student responses, peaking student interest, and monitoring vocabulary and grammar. There are also challenges teachers face when teaching students to properly write English. Primarily, there are the issues of spelling and handwriting, which can be very sensitive subjects depending on the students. Teachers need to have patience, especially when working with students who write in different characters than the English language. Similarly, layout and punctuation can be vastly different between English and another language, meaning students need attentive feedback in order to improve their skills. Lastly, teachers should try and be creative with writing activities to keep students interested and engaged.
