Test 11 - Teaching Receptive Skills
Receptive skills are essentially the roots of language learning. In order for students to start learning the language, they need to learn to understand it and its complexity. "Understanding" isn't just about defining the word or directly translating it into students' native languages, but also about gaining knowledge about that culture to better understand context. It's important to balance teaching tough vocabulary and leaving words out and encouraging students to be curios and discover their meanings on their own, preferably through the context of the language they are hearing or reading. Finding interesting topics through carefully chosen authentic texts can help motivate students in their curiosity about the language and motivate students to be more active in practicing.
