Unit 16 focused on conditionals and reported speech. Concerning conditionals, the form and usage of zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional, and mixed conditional were discussed. Typical errors or mistakes student might make were mentioned (e.g. difference between the first and the second conditionals). Teaching ideas were recommended such as split sentences or the nuclear bunker role play.
The difference between direct and indirect (reported) speech was well explained. The necessary changes in verb tenses, pronouns, and time expressions when using reported speech were emphasised. Potential mistakes and errors were mentioned since it can be highly problematic for students to learn all the necessary changes when using reported speech. One of the suggested teaching methods to teach reported speech was intermediaries.
