Unit 5, Planning Lessons, taught me that lesson plans are my own unique, creative, blueprints for structuring a class around a specific objective. This objective states what I want students to accomplish by the end of the lesson. For me, it is crucial to remember that I need to keep the plan simple, keep the same structure (using the provided lesson plan format provided by TEFL or create my own modified version), make sure the skills and activities fit and flow together, tailor the lesson plan and make changes as the moment calls for it, log the anticipated time of each lesson in the margin of the plan, and don't script the lesson. To prepare for the class, I loved how TEFL gave me a specific checklist of items like check that i have the lesson plan to refer to during class, run through it to make sure I have the materials and the equipment works, lay out the materials before class starts, arrange seats strategically, clean the board, and chat with students as they enter class to break the ice. I also learned that it's important to think and write down specific problems and their solutions that I anticipate. And what a great idea to keep a historical record of what I've done and when so I can teach the same lesson in the future without reinventing the wheel! This will cut down on preparation time.
