The direct speech is used when someone is speaking in a direct way..at that specific time. The reported speech is a more formal way to 'report' a direct speech.
If you have to change the direct speech into a reported speech, you have to change the tenses (is called backshifting) and you have to change the time. (for example; today-that day, now-then, yesterday-the day before,tomorrow-the next day, this-that etc).
