This lesson focused on building the critical receptive TEFL skills of listening and reading. There are many purposes for receptive skills based on the nature of task. For instance skimming a longer report or news article to get the general idea, listening intently to an interview to obtain a detailed understanding, or scanning a piece of written material to find very specific information. This means that these skills are linked to the attention of the listener or reader, and also that in teaching these skills is of importance for teachers to do the following: 1) engage the reader or listener at his/her own level; and find topics of interest to the broadest range of students, and/or to vary topics so that all students interests are met over through the life of the course so everyone feels included. This can be done by selective reading via inauthentic texts (written or audio) that are designed for language learners or authentic texts (also can be written or audio) that are intended for general consumption - not specifically for language learners - but that can challenge and thus build the skills of language learners. IN presenting text or audio for building receptive skills it is good to Engage with general intro to whatever the subject of the text will be, but to pre-teach a selected, but not overly broad, set of vocabulary during the study phase.
