Testing and evaluating serves many purposes in the classroom. Placement and diagnostic tests help teachers see what level of english students have and what sort of things they should focus on in the upcoming term. Progress tests can be given throughout the corse to monitor how students are doing. Some teachers do not like progress tests because there is potential to focus on memory rather than conceptual learning and these teachers usually feel they can monitor the progress of students by seeing them regularly in class. Other exams can be given at the end of a course. There are many external exams that students may be preparing for.
