Unit 14 has taught me the difference between authentic and created materials. Authentic materials can be good real life practice, students need to build confidence levels and improve fluency with real life content they may come across later in life. Created materials can be more tailored to suit specific needs of the students and maintain interest and participation. Course books can be useful when used accordingly however they can have a negative impact on student interest and make lessons predicable if used too much. It is recommended to use the course book moderately and supplement its lesson content with created materials to maintain interest and student participation. However your students/classes specific needs (difficulties in specific sections for specific nationalities) are not always accounted for and this is when the teacher has to step in and create new materials to address individual classes/ students problem areas.
